Stop the Extreme Upzoning of North Beach
Supervisor Danny Sauter's extreme upzoning plan enriches real estate speculators and developers who build luxury condos. But our rents and housing costs will skyrocket, small businesses will be priced out. There is no affordable housing included, and the neighborhood we love will be changed forever.
Skyrocketing Rents and Housing Costs
65% of North Beach residents live in rent-controlled, multi-family apartments. Many units will be demolished by Sauter's new luxury towers, although Sauter's own rental unit has been made exempt from demolition. The bottom line is that upzoning will make North Beach even more unaffordable than it is today.
Luxury Towers We Can't Afford
The homes and apartments in these new towers will only be affordable to the wealthiest, with many rents over $4,000 per month. Sauter's plan is a bonanza for developers, but provides no homes for essential workers, artists, teachers, caregivers, and all the people who make San Francisco and North Beach such a special place.
Pricing Out Treasured Small Businesses
San Francisco's Small Business Commission has refused to support Sauter's proposal because it fails to protect the small businesses that have been making North Beach a special place for generations. They will be hit with massive lease increases, forcing them to move out and be replaced by corporate chain stores.
Threatening the Neighborhood We Love
Sauter's plan guts the neighborhoods he was elected to represent. It demolishes historic buildings, will overwhelm local infrastructure, replace our vibrant street life with high-end condos and national chain stores, and create a new wall of tall luxury towers that block our waterfront.
